Around 25,000 households in south-east Queensland woke up without power on Monday morning after severe thunderstorms passed over the state, bringing wind gusts hitting 109 kilometers per hour.

Substantial Frozen Precipitation and Extensive Damage

Residents observed giant hailstones as large as 7 centimeters in some areas. Weather authorities verified that multiple regions across the state had been hit with significant hail.

Emergency crews were attempting to repair electricity service throughout the damaged zones, with approximately seventy teams deployed to address the widespread outages.

Victorian Storm Challenges

At the same time, approximately 1,000 residents in Victoria also faced energy failures after the metropolitan area experienced its most precipitation in a year and a half.

Emergency response teams responded to over five hundred calls for help across the area, mainly for building damage but also for downed trees and flooding.

• Werribee - recorded significant destruction
• Hoppers Crossing suburb - various emergency calls
• Wyndham area - over 175 emergency requests

At the height on the previous day, more than 28k energy customers in the state were experiencing outages.

Weather Forecast

Humid circumstances were forecast to persist along large portions of Queensland's east this next several days as a weather pattern continued to pull in damp air against the shoreline.

The following day was expected to become the most rainy day, with persistent thunderstorm potential anticipated across various areas of both states.

Medical Alert

Public health experts warned that there was an increased chance of thunderstorm-induced asthma across the countryside regions, specifically given the current weather patterns.

This alert comes after past events where comparable situations led to substantial respiratory problems in the state.
