Just as bad weather tore through the north-west the prior day, the home side overwhelmed United away at the Etihad. It was a convincing 3-0 victory for Andrée Jeglertz’s side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that firmly established their leadership claims as they consolidated their position at the league summit.

Consecutive Defeats for United

This result marked consecutive WSL setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since May 2024, putting them a significant margin off the table toppers with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.

United’s capability to juggle domestic and European soccer with a thin team has been a widely debated topic since they secured entry to the European competition. Considering the fixture list, it always felt like this was the matchday that would truly test this ability. Regrettably for the away side, they seemed tired from start to finish, the memorable win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having taken a toll.

Lineup Adjustments

The United manager had tried to rotate the squad with a handful of adjustments. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all provided vigor, although the exclusion of the high-performing Malard to the sidelines caused surprise.

Manchester City, in contrast, have no such fitness concerns. Andrée Jeglertz made a single alteration from the previous win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her initial starting appearance since returning from a fitness issue.

Dominant First Half

The storm clouds started to gather for Skinner and his side from the kickoff. This was a demonstration of the strength from City whose potent attack played with and dismantled the opposition with a sublime first half performance that saw them put three past the keeper in just over twenty minutes.

This placed City firmly in control and saw the visitors struggling. In advance of this fixture, the away side had allowed just few in this league campaign but they fell apart in the wake of the hosts' creative prowess.

Initial Opportunities

The warning signs came soon when Vivianne Miedema used her power to bundle Zigiotti off the ball, only to drag her shot wide. Hemp was at the heart of everything in the beginning, using the space left by Riviere down the visitors' wing. Her deliveries were creating danger and led to an opportunity for Yui Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg cleared off the line.

The Red Devils had multiple sorties forward, their long-ball tactic giving them options in the flanks but they could not trouble the City goalkeeper. City, meanwhile, commanded possession, probing their rivals and trying to draw them out of their defensive shape.

Scoring Spree

They made their pressure count with almost thirty minutes played when Fujino won the home team a corner. A delivery to the far post was nodded across goal by Bunny Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to nod home. It was Manchester City's seventh headed goal of the term.

They increased their lead with another pair of goals just before the half-time. When Jade Rose was allowed to drive through the midfield from defense, the pitch widened for the hosts. The influential Casparij received possession on the right side before providing a pinpoint driven ball for Shaw to bundle home. A short time later, they had a third after a swift turnover in the ball saw Lauren Hemp afforded the room to fire a shot home from range.

After the Break

The most obvious change came from Skinner at the half-time as Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was futile to alter the outcome of the game. Former City player Park came closest, hitting the post, but the visitors were creatively abject and did not manage to record a single shot on goal.

The hosts, meanwhile, could have increased their advantage when a superb Vivianne Miedema through ball sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it mattered little to the hosts. After failing to defeat any opponent who finished above them in the prior term, City's side now have wins against the Gunners and Manchester United to position them in a commanding situation after the opening fixtures.
